How High Energy Words Impact Your Conversations
INDEX
|
I went to a party recently.
Since I knew many people there, conversations
were smooth and quick. Apart from great food, elegant hosting, and nice anniversary
decorations, something else caught my attention. It was two people and their
responses to the same question.
Me: Hi, how are you?
Person #1: I am good.
Person #2: I am great!
I didn’t think much of it in that moment.
And without thinking, I found myself interacting more with Person #2. I was
glad to find someone new who was enthusiastic and had great opinions on many
matters.
It was when I got back home. At
night after I was settled on my bed, I began thinking: What was it about Person
#2 that made me connect naturally? What was it about her that built an instant
connection?
After a few minutes of reflection,
I was surprised. I never thought the answer to a mundane question could be such
an amazing gateway to a heartfelt conversation.
When I had asked her how she was, she responded I am great! whereas the other person had used the word good (I am good).
It was the difference of two words used
that made the difference: Good and Great.
When Person #1 said good, I did not feel anything.
When Person #2 said great, I instantly felt a rush of energy
within. A warm flow of enthusiasm took me over.
I smiled on my bed. How one word can
put life in the moment and how another word can take it out!

Choose high-energy words for effective communication |
Well, I never went to such a party and never met these two people, But I definitely had thousands of conversations that started with a simple sentence: How are you?
Have you ever felt the need to check
in on your answer to this simple silly question? Did you ever feel anything
once the person you are talking to responded in a lazy/energetic way?
If you haven’t and didn’t, then
today is your lucky day.
Because we are going to learn
something very interesting: High-Energy Words and Low-Energy Words.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HIGH-ENERGY WORDS AND LOW-ENERGY WORDS
High–energy words are exactly what
they sound – They carry high energy. When used, the speaker and the listener both
feel a rush of enthusiasm in their bodies.
Examples of high-energy words are amazing, fantastic, great, stunning, awesome, breathtaking, splendid, and so
on.
As you must have guessed by now,
low-energy words are the exact opposite. They pull the energy out of the
speaker and the listener’s bodies when used.
Examples of low-energy words are okay, alright, well, fine, good, and so on.
Next time you are at a gathering (not in the fictional one that I just took you to), try this. Ask someone how are you and observe the shift in your energy once they respond, even if it is the slightest.
Or, try it yourself! When someone
else asks you the same question, deflect from your usual boring monotonous reaction
of I am fine/All is well/Life is good,
and try I am great/All is pretty
well/Life is amazing!
You are welcome!
